Middle School Science Week: Discovering the Beauty of Science

Saturday 18 Mar 2023

Starting from Monday, the dome of the school became lively every noon – the Middle School Science Week (Science Week) kicked off this week.

Biological specimens, slice observation, DIY cell and system model exhibition, science experiment show… Different types of science projects ignited the students’ desire for exploration and scientific enthusiasm.

Middle school students became little teachers, teaching younger students how to observe cells using microscopes. They adjusted the microscopes and taught their knowledge to their peers and other subject teachers.

In the process, the younger students gained rich knowledge and cultivated an interest in science learning, while the older students applied what they learned to better understand the associations and logic behind the knowledge.

On Tuesday, a “paper airplane contest” was held under the dome. After learning the principles of paper airplane flight, teachers and students worked together to fold paper airplanes and compare which one could fly farther.

Seventh-grade students prepared a science experiment show, using their spare time after class to adjust the proportion of reagents in the laboratory and demonstrating three small experiments, including “Pharaoh’s snake”, “color-changing water”, and “helium gas that instantly changes mechanical sound”. They hosted the entire event and interacted warmly with their classmates, receiving countless applause.

Seventh and eighth-grade students participated in a one-week Science Fair activity. Students followed the scientific inquiry method, thought about problems, proposed hypotheses, organized materials, designed experiments, analyzed data, and finally drew conclusions, step by step exploring the problems that their group members were interested in. Teachers also provided guidance for each group’s questions.

On Friday, the students showcased their research results and explained their research process and scientific knowledge to their peers and teachers.

Their research covered interesting topics in fields such as biology, physics, and chemistry, such as “which fruit has the highest sugar content?” “What are the factors that affect plant growth?” “What is the impact of aspirin on plant growth?” “Do you need oil to make popcorn?” and “What is the best way to make sugar painting?”

These small problems in life and small pieces of knowledge that are easily overlooked in textbooks greatly attracted everyone’s attention and made everyone realize that “science is so interesting”!

Although the content of middle school courses is significantly more specialized and difficult than that of primary school courses, through activities such as “Science Week”, students learn and apply knowledge and research in a way that helps them solve practical problems. This not only enables them to learn professional knowledge and improve their research skills, but also increases their sense of satisfaction, self-confidence, and achievement.

There are many such activities in the school, and we have always been committed to cultivating students’ ability to learn independently and practice hands-on skills. Stay tuned!
