Innovation Week, de-stress after an End of Semester exams!

Monday 20 Jan 2020

“How can we diffuse a virtual bomb in virtual reality with only my classmates to help me?” This was the type of challenge the students were faced with during Innovation Week.

During the flag-raising speech, the science teachers announced the launch of Innovation Week and the good tidings that our 2 Grade 10 students published their article on King’s College School’s Life Magazine.

Organized by Science and Tech Departments, Innovation Week’s aims were for students to be creative, integrate multiple subjects into one project, work together as a team, and to spark interest. Innovation is a new idea, design, product or way of thinking. Each day had several events split across different schools and age groups to suit different abilities. Students also earn points for their Houses.

Primary School小学(1-3年级)

Lower Primary had special Science-In-A-Box experiments such as Underwater Volcano, Non-Newtonian Fluids, Build a Wobble Detector, and Play with a Shadow.

Primary School 小学(4-6年级)

Primary School‘s wormbot race was making robots that used innovative movement mechanics(without CPU)to guide path. The simplicity of the parts was offset by the creativity and innovative spirit of the young designers.

In Ping Pong Ball Catapult, students had to design a catapult with a lever system using very simple materials like wooden sticks and elastic bands. Knowledge of material property and forces was useful to launch further shot.

Geodesic dome acquires their knowledge of forces and material properties to build a dome that was both tall and could structurally carry the most weight.

Junior High School 初中部

Junior High School started off with a Rubik’s Cube Relay. We use it to celebrate students ability to learn algorithms to solve problems and the understanding of spatial relationship. Students were racing fast and even competed with their teachers.

Our Physics Teacher Stan was excited to compete with students on stage. “I was a bit nervous and nearly forgot the STEPS.” Stan said. Maybe teachers will take over champion students’ homework haha

Domino was to design creative triggers, sequences and patterns with the least number of attempts. They had a short time to plan, setup, build, and eventually topple this beautiful display. This challenge also tested their patience, persistence and resilience.

Robot Sumo was a blast!Design and creativity will make their robot more competitive.

Senior High School 高中部

Senior High School had TEDx Talk covers Space Race to Mars, Network Security, Bilingual Brain, Facial Recognition and the Positive Impact of Drones.

Students then had a tough job of diffusing a virtual bomb using VR headsets and their teams vocal cues to guide them. Thrilled!

Their final challenge was to build a better tennis ball launcher using recycled wood, HDPE Plastic and rubber straps. Knowledge applied included conservation of energy and material property. They used engineering and technical skills.

SHOWCASES作品与项目展示

Projects were showcased including robots, posters, medical science and anatomy.

International School showcased Diet and Circulatory System. They acted as Nurses, Cardiologists, Pulmonologist, Nutritionists and Fitness coaches. They calculated visitors’ BMI and took blood pressure, heart sound and provided advices.

企业分享Local  Companies’ Talk

Several companies were invited to inspire students about the latest developments in science and Tech, future careers and trends. We had Hangzhou VR Tech Company, Hangzhou Maker Planets STEAM Education Club, and Whale Company which provides AI Tech to International Brands.

Wu Jiajia, Director of VR Content R & D Dept. of Hangzhou VR Technology Co., Ltd. introduced the latest application of VR in different fields.

Guo Liang, the Director of teaching and research of Hangzhou Maker Planet STEAM Education Club shared his personal career story as an engineer and the STEM knowledge. He is quite happy to share with our students and was surprised and excited to get sharp questions from students. His advice: Pursue your Authenticity. Find your interest and let the interest guide you to accept the real world challenge.

Former Facebook/ Amazon engineer, Whale Company’s Co-founder & CTO Wang Zun provided an inspiring talk about his career,AI and “future shop”.
